Jesse Carey Molloy (born April 29, 1975)[1][2][3] is an American saxophone player and music producer originating from Ashland, Oregon. He is currently based in Los Angeles.

At the age of nine, Molloy was at a local church with his family and saw a man playing Amazing Grace on the saxophone. This inspired him to also want to play the instrument, and his parents got him an alto saxophone the following Christmas.[4] Molloy received private lessons and also played in his high school's band.

Molloy graduated from Southern Oregon University in 2001[1] and after college joined a soul-jazz group based in San Diego, California. The group toured frequently and averaged about 150 shows a year. He later relocated to San Diego full time and began playing with several local bands and touring groups before moving to Los Angeles. Molloy did some shows with T-Boz from the group TLC as well as Mike Posner.[4] He was a long time touring member of the group The Pink Floyd Experience. Since 2009, he has been a member of the production duo Crush Effect with David Veith.[5][6][7][8] Molloy began touring with Panic! at the Disco in 2017.[9]

In 2017, Molloy was recruited by The Midnight to play the saxophone at the band's first-ever live show in San Francisco.[10][11] He continued to played saxophone for most of the band's live shows up until the Fall 2021 and Spring 2022 Tour. Molloy played the saxophone on the song Deep Blue from The Midnight's 2020 album Monsters. This was his first time playing saxophone for the band on a studio release. Later in 2020, he contributed to the band's EP Horror Show, co-writing the song Good in Red and playing the saxophone on Because The Night. In 2022, Molloy played saxophone on the track Brooklyn. Friday. Love. from the album Heroes.[12]

Nocturnal track listing

River of Darkness[1] is a song by The Midnight featuring Timecop1983. It is the fourth track from their album Nocturnal.

The song was written by band members Tim McEwan and Tyler Lyle alongside Jordy Leenaerts and produced by McEwan. The saxophone on River of Darkness was performed by Thomas Edinger and the lead guitar was done by Pelle Hillström. It has a running time of six minutes and five seconds and is in the key of E-flat minor.

River of Darkness was one of the four songs whose stems were made available to download during the first The Midnight Remix Radio competition.

McEwan revealed the source of the intro voice at live show Q&A session in 2022:

“I— maybe I should reveal— I’ve had so many questions through the years, whether on social media, people asking— asking us for ‘Sunset’ and the ‘River of Darkness’, and I…. I kinda revealed the ‘Sunset’ one the other day, that it wasn’t from a movie, and I kept a tight lip, but maybe now I should reveal that I actually… it’s a script that I wrote out, and actually, I was… the studio I was renting a room at in Hollywood back then, in 2017… there was one of the— one of the owners, one of the producer guys that ran the studios, he was named Eric, and, I was like, ‘Eric, can you— do you wanna help me out? Come in here?’, and he read out my script. I was like, ‘imagine you’re in a smoke— you’re in a smokey bar, and it’s a scene from kind of an ‘80s noir movie, and it’s very masculine and kinda like, very sexy, low-spoken voice… keep it husky and sexy.’ And he was like, [imitating husky voice] ‘Hey man… I know you miss her, man…’, and I was like ‘That’s exactly right.”

“And I put tons of compression on it, to— and put some background, kinda like, noise to make it feel like it was… you know how movie clips are so compressed, you hear all the background noises and all the mouth noises, and it almost becomes like ASMR because it’s so, like, compressed? And I did that, and I was like— I was pretty chuffed with myself.”

Lyrics

Glowing windows in the buildings from the elevated train
I see a thousand different stories pass
And faces without names

I forget why I came here
And forget why I stay
And wonder if they'd notice
If I slipped away

What if I kept going
What if I don't get off tonight
What if I ride this to the edges
Through the darkness to the light

Could I find you there?
Could I find you there?
If I slipped away?

What if there's no answer
We’re all just hearts that have to fight
Through the dangers of the rapids
Through the darkness to the light

Could I find you there?
Could I find you there?
If I slipped away?

Singles from The Midnight Remixed

The Midnight Remixed is the first remix album by The Midnight. It was released through the label Silk Music on August 14, 2017.[1] The album contains remixes of songs from Days of Thunder and Endless Summer.

Prior to the release of The Midnight Remixed, Silk Music issued singles for the songs WeMoveForward, Sunset, and Days of Thunder.[2][3][4] These single releases included the original songs as well as their corresponding remixes that would later be included on the album. A fourth single, Synthetic, was issued after the album's release and contains an additional four remixes of the song that didn't appear on the album.[5]

The Midnight Remixed was a milestone release for the band. It was their first album to be associated with a label and the first to make an appearance on a Billboard chart, where it charted at number 22 on the Billboard Dance/Electronic Albums Chart.[6][7] It was also the first The Midnight album to feature the band's second logo on the cover art, which continues to be used today. The success of The Midnight Remixed led to Silk Music releasing a second The Midnight remix album two years later, The Midnight Remixed 02.

Background

The first collaboration between The Midnight and electronic music label Silk Music was the March 2016 release of the single WeMoveForward. This single included the original song, its instrumental version, and a new remix by Talamanca.[8] Another single, Days Of Thunder, was released later that year in August and included the original song and a new remix by PROFF.[9]

On July 24, 2017, Sunset was announced as the third The Midnight remix single from Silk Music.[10] The same day, it was confirmed that a full remix album was coming with a planned release date of August 14, and the album art and track list were revealed.[11]

The Midnight Remixed was a success for the band and Silk Music, charting at number 22 on the Billboard Dance/Electronic Albums Chart.[6][7] This was the first time a release by The Midnight charted on Billboard.[12] Silk Music followed this up by releasing a fourth and final single on December 18, Synthetic.[13] This single did not include the original song but instead featured five remixed versions of it.

Official description

Consisting of Danish-born (LA-based) producer Tim McEwan and NYC-based singer-songwriter Tyler Lyle, The Midnight have emerged in recent years as a veritable leader of the synthwave resurgence. More specifically, the duo have received generous support from legions of synthwave enthusiasts, as well as more casual synth-pop fans, ever since their aesthetic-defining debut EP, "Days of Thunder" (2014). Their subsequent LP offering, "Endless Summer" (2016), cemented the duo's reputation as one of the finest new synthwave acts, a sentiment that musical legends (Chicane), renowned artist peers (FM-84), and prominent genre hubs (NewRetroWave) have graciously reinforced of late. The Midnight Remixed, one of our most ambitious releases to date, features brand new remixes by a distinguished group of Silk Music veterans, whose melodic and atmospheric sound has significantly helped to define our brand. We've also recruited a few famed nonresident label contributors, including Lifelike and Michael Cassette, whose specific compositional gifts and musical legacies seemed especially apropos to this 80s-influenced endeavor.

The Midnight Remixed showcases breathtaking new interpretations of The Midnight's past work, ranging in style from drum & bass and deep house to trance & progressive. Michael Cassette, Johan Vilborg, Dezza, Lifelike, PROFF, Terry Da Libra, Sundriver, and Talamanca's exhilarating, club-oriented interpretations feature rapturous chords, and, of course, Tyler's mellifluous and infectious vocal hooks. Offerings from Marsh, Vintage & Morelli, eleven.five, and Mango vs. We Are All Astronauts convey a deeper and more introspective musical tone, but are nonetheless equally memorable.
