Sunset
Sunset[1] is a song by The Midnight. It is the first single and second track from their album Endless Summer. The single was released on May 13, 2016. Silk Music released a remix single of Sunset on August 7, 2017, with this release also containing the Michael Cassette Remix, which would later be included on the 2017 remix album The Midnight Remixed.[2][3]
The song was written by band members Tim McEwan and Tyler Lyle and produced by McEwan. The guitar on Sunset was performed by Johannes Jørgensen. It has a running time of five minutes and 26 seconds and is in the key of F major. Sunset is considered to be one of The Midnight's signature songs and is often the last song performed at live shows.
In addition to appearing on The Midnight Remixed, the Michael Cassette Extended Remix of Sunset appears on the Silk Music compilation Silk Music Pres. Progressive House Essentials 06.[4]
During a fan question-and-answer session on Twitter, Lyle said this about the lyrics of Sunset:[5]Now that song started at a cheap motel in Burlington, VT. There were crow bar marks on the door frame. I thought “now this would be the first stop for a couple of kids who faked their deaths and went on the run.”
Official description
Sunset (incl. Michael Cassette Remix)As we prepare for the mid-August album release of "The Midnight Remixed," we are pleased to present the third and final pre-album single, "Sunset," featuring a brand new remix by iconic 80s-influenced artist Michael Cassette.
There was a sense of destiny behind Michael Cassette's triumphant remix of "Sunset." The Finnish producer's 2010 album, "Temporarity," released on the mighty Anjunadeep stable, remains the benchmark upon which modern-day synthwave is often assessed. Coaxed out of a significant production hiatus, Michael Cassette proves that he has not lost a compositional step. His life-affirming take accentuates The Midnight's euphoric chords and equally inspired, sing-along vocals, not to mention the original cut's hurts-so-good cinematic 80s aesthetic.
In this release, for good measure, we have also included The Midnight's original version of "Sunset," an instant synthwave classic that will forever remain synonymous with the genre. From the song's cinematic opening monologue to its poignant melodic outro, "Sunset" is Tim and Tyler's achingly beautiful ode to fellow wistful souls.
Demo version
An early demo of Sunset was released as a prize during the Fall 2020 ARG. Titled Sunset (early guide), the backing track is essentially identical to the final, but some instrumentation is missing, such as the guitar solo and synth chimes. There is also not a spoken intro. Tyler Lyle's vocal track is different from the final and there is no vocal layering in the chorus.

Lyrics
faked our deaths
lit a match
closed the door
waited for the flash
greyhound station
paid in cash
miss lazarus
we're coming back
they say it's darkest before the dawn
we've been in this town for far too long
they say it's darkest before the dawn
we're moving on
sunset
no regrets
first chance
last dance
stuck in the middle
even bad girls
know good love
you taste so sweet
it hurts a little
make our home
where we stand
one suitcase
and half a plan
follow the wolves
and sing along
past the voices
to the Song
they say it's darkest before the dawn
we've been in this town for far too long
they say it's darkest before the dawn
we're moving on
sunset
no regrets
first chance
last dance
stuck in the middle
even bad girls
know good love
you taste so sweet
it hurts a little
