Fire In The Sky[1] is a song by The Midnight. It is the eighth track from their album Monsters. An official music video for Fire In The Sky was released on June 10, 2021.[2]
Track info
The song was written by band members Tim McEwan and Tyler Lyle alongside Collin McLoughlin and produced by McEwan. It has a running time of four minutes and nine seconds and is in the key of B minor.
Fire In The Sky is a re-interpretation of Lyle's solo song Fighting Fire, which was originally featured in a promotional video for the second season of the HBO series Togetherness in 2015.[3] It was released as a bonus track from his From the Secret Lair project on Bandcamp in 2016.[4][5]
Lyle has said that Fire In The Sky is a companion song to Deep Blue, describing the songs as "mirror image love stories that swallow our narrator."[6] During an interview with Magnetic Magazine, the band said this about Fire In The Sky:[7]
Tim: I had a track that I had called “Creatures in the Sky” and Tyler had a song called “Fighting Fire.” For a long time I couldn’t find the right way to crack the code on that song but it all clicked when I thought about combining the two and, as a low key homage to the 90s TV movie of the same name, called it Fire in the Sky. This was my “in” to approach the track. It gave Tyler’s rebellious song about passion and a relationship doomed to fail a science fiction twist that made it feel like a Midnight song. Now it’s one of my favorite tracks on the album.
Tyler: This started as a co-write in LA, and I really wanted to figure out a way for it to exist on the record. Tim hacked away at it for a long time without much progress, until one day he cracked it. I love this track.
Music Video
A YouTube listing for a music video for Fire In The Sky was revealed on the band's social media on June 8, 2021.[8] The next day, a short clip of the video was shown and a premiere date of June 10, 2021, was given.[9] The video officially went live at 2 PM EST that day.[10]
The music video was directed by Lucky and starred Phia Blomquist and Jalen Philpott, who also directed and starred in the music video for Deep Blue.[2][11]
Lyrics
I wasn’t looking for forever or a one night stand
I was just hoping for a smile or a quick slow dance
But when I saw you, there was nothing I could ever do
To ignore the smell of smoke across the room
I’ve had my mistakes
But my heart was clean
But I’m made of matches
You’re made of gasoline
The room around began to catch fire and disappear
Fighting fire with flames
If I burn down would you do the same
You tell me it’s wrong
But we’re both to blame
I wasn’t looking for a sign
When I touched you your skin was hot and eyes were clear
And the room around began to catch fire and disappear
I told my heart that I would keep it safe and locked away
But I found myself walking to you through the flame
I saw the flashes
I saw the fire grow
I saw the ember
I saw the cinder smoke
The room around began to catch fire and disappear;
I see fire in the sky
