Deep Blue[1] is a song by The Midnight. It is the second single and twelfth track from their album Monsters. The single was released on May 6, 2020.[2][3] The Droid Bishop Remix of Deep Blue was released as a single on September 17, 2021, after being selected as the winner of The Midnight Remix Radio Vol. 2.[4]

The song was written by band members Tim McEwan and Tyler Lyle and produced by McEwan. The saxophone on Deep Blue was performed by Jesse Molloy. It has a running time of three minutes and 57 seconds and is in the key of B minor.

Lyle has said that Deep Blue is a companion song to Fire In The Sky, describing the songs as "mirror image love stories that swallow our narrator."[5]

During an interview with Magnetic Magazine, the band commented on Deep Blue:[6]

Tim: This was the last track we did for the album. The skeleton of the song was written on tour in spring 2019 for a movie and then later reworked into its current form. When Tyler first sang me those verses, I think we both hi-fived.

Tyler: We’d been approached by the director of a big Hollywood blockbuster type movie who wanted to work with us to create music for the film. While we were on tour in Columbus, Tim and I had an off day and thought that we should use it to work on the music for the film. So we booked a studio, sketched out a demo pretty quickly, then went to Olive Garden to celebrate. Tim totally gutted the original production and instead of a happy, major key, up-tempo celebration of falling in love, it became more ominous, more brooding, and more fun.

Lyrics

Deep Blue promotional poster

I wasn’t looking for action
Just some distraction
Just a little weeknight
Booth in the back
I wasn’t looking for romance
Just a quick slow dance
On the off chance
That an off night
And a side glance
Might lead me to the wrong hands

I wasn’t looking for you

I wasn’t after forever
Just for whatever
I was one of the dark hearts
Who thought that they’d never
Truly be open
But this is an explosion

Of star crossed and
Blood rush and
Hair tossed and
Cheeks flushed
And weeks lost

I wasn’t looking for you

I said “I’ve never felt my heart like this”
She said “I’ve never felt my body”
I always thought the point of love was just
To keep from falling

Into the deep blue

I wasn’t looking for devotion
Just cheap emotion
But I found love, I found love like an ocean
On my second whiskey
Your eyes try to miss me
They lost control
I didn’t know I had a soul until the moment you kissed me

I wasn’t looking for you

I said “I’ve never felt my heart like this”
She said “I’ve never felt my body”
I always thought
The point of love was just
To keep from falling

Into the deep blue
