The Midnight -- Days of Thunder [Synthwave/Synthpop] (2014)
Having been a kid through the 80s, I dig this 80s throwback synthpop (ugh; labels) scene quite a bit. Heres one of my favourite tracks http://youtu.be/I_x11lrxLj8
Yes. I am one of those annoying folk who people often shout at "YOU BELONG IN THE 80s" whenever I start jamming out.
I like a wide variety of music, but nothing beats that synth and cowbell. YEEEAH!
edit: THIS VIDEO IS MAKING ME NOSTALGIC FOR TIMES WHERE I DIDN'T EVEN EXIST.
I was gonna say the same thing! I actually had the red and black version of the 10th anniversary Z in high school (which I believe are even more rare)
I never knew that. My best friend has one. He is currently rebuilding his and I am rebuilding my 79' black trans am. Once we are done, we plan to drive around the west coast, t-tops down, and listening to 80's pop/rock.
I have to disagree with the consensus here and say I loved the vocals. They sounded perfectly suiting to me.
I also adore that this is like a synthpop reimagining of Don Henley's Boys of Summer.
if you like the vocals, check out gloria: http://themidnight.bandcamp.com/album/days-of-thunder
"What the f*** is synthwave/synthpop?... Oh well click... Holy shit, this is an amazing track"
I like "RetrolaserSynth" myself, as a name, but whatever.
Some of what I've been listening to recently:
If you guys like this type of thing, there's a sick Youtube channel called New Retro Wave devoted to new music with a retro style. Here's a link: https://www.youtube.com/user/NewRetroWave
I could listen to this channel all day.
Mitch Murder is awesome and his new album Interceptor is killer. This should be at the top, especially since he only does instrumentals.
THAT DIGI DASH THO!!!
I really wish I could retro-fit my 2008 car with one of those awesome digital dashboards from the 80's like this one, since my car is a VW.
Thought I was listening to a remix of Don Henley - Boys of Summer at the beginning. The title almost seems like a reference, too (Boys/Days of Thunder/Summer).
Ever heard of Twin Shadow - Castles in the Snow.. that vocal style on this music would be nice.
Its weird you have a small photo of a 1981 280zx 100th anniversary datsun lol! The music isnt half bad though in this video but here is the video for that thumbnail. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZDUhKp-vtHE
thanks! I thought they had created that sequence just for the video - the actual ad is more 80s than I ever thought was possible!
Where did they find find a mint C4? I'm not huge on the vocals. They don't fit with the music
Wow, I really like this track. I agree withe everyone that the vocals aren't the best sound ever, but at least the lyrics keep with the theme. My favorite vocalists for Synthwave are definitely Who Ha - Out Running and Le Cassette - Radio.
I know it's a long shot here. But this totally looks sounds and feels like an American Initial D to me. I like it.
Don't really understand what people mean by "flat vocals". I think they're really good. Keeps it interesting, I get burned out on purely instrumental tracks pretty quickly. Cheap Talk is another great band http://cheaptalk.bandcamp.com/
Still Corners is another band that I love because their 80's homage.
I normally don't comment on any posts from this sub. I generally take awesome suggestions and go about my day, but this track. My goodness, I LOVE this. I went to their bandcamp site to listen to their EP and it's all so damned good. Thanks for the suggestion. More of this please!
I just bought the EP after finding this here today. I can't get enough of these guys. Amazing stuff from start to finish. Apparently reddit has been blowing them up today and they deserve it. Do yourself a favor and check out ALL of their other songs. I've been running kick drums and red wine on repeat for the last 20 minutes.
The song is ok, but the video is what really kept me interested.
Everybody running trying to cash in on what Kavinsky really started...
As someone who has been listening to 80s-inspired electro since 2007-2008ish, years before Kavinsky came in the scene, you probably have no idea how much a kick in the balls it is to hear that. Artists like FM Attack, Grum, and Tesla Boy were doing this sound before him. IMO, Kavinsky is quickly becoming the Skrillex of this genre.
This isn't meant to be an attack on you, BTW. I just get annoyed when people say he started it all.
Now that that's off my chest, obligatory invitation to r/80selectro and Project Friday, a weekly radio show playing nothing but synthwave, dreamwave, outrun and synthpop. There's also Synthwave Sunday on synthetix.fm, but I haven't ever listened to the show because it's on at like 7am here and I have never met the host.
